De Wolf And Lommel – Love Affair

To say Nestaan Husqvarna factory rider, Kay de Wolf loves the tough Lommel circuit, would be a huge understatement. It hasn’t been one way traffic in the love affair though, as Lommel also saw him hurt himself at the track in 2023 and miss the Sunday races.

In his first year in Grand Prix racing, de Wolf finished second in the MX2 class 2021, second in MX2 in 2022, although as mentioned, de Wolf had a tough time at the 2023 MXGP of Flanders in Lommel, where an injury forced him to withdraw early and take only five championship points. He did however come back to win in the MX2 class in 2024 and 2025.

Last year, the Dutchman’s perfect 1-1-1 scorecard marked a pivotal moment in his MX2 title campaign-catapulting him back into second in the championship standings and reigniting the chase for the red plate.

“Lommel is a special place for me,” De Wolf said. “It’s one of the most demanding tracks on the calendar, but I felt at home straight away. From the first lap on Saturday, everything just clicked - I found my rhythm early and focused on staying smooth and consistent. From the first lap on Saturday, I felt super comfortable. I found my rhythm and just focused on keeping consistent. The team gave me the perfect bike for this kind of track - I could use my height and style to really ride the sand well. This was exactly the weekend we needed in the championship fight.”

In 2024 and around what is widely regarded as one of the most unforgiving and challenging motocross circuits in the world, de Wolf delivered a superb qualifying win, and a set of 1-2 finishes on Sunday, to secure the overall victory.

De Wolf arrived at what could be considered his alternate home circuit - just 25 km down the road from his hometown of Valkenswaard in the Netherlands - in full confidence; having secured his fifth win of the season just a week earlier at the MXGP of the Czech Republic.

“It was a really positive weekend overall.” De Wolf said after his victory. “I’m happy to finally win Lommel - I can’t thank the team enough; I think the timing is really great too. Having everyone here, just two minutes from the workshop, and with the news on Friday that Husqvarna is staying!”

Now in 2026, the talented sand rider will no doubt be hoping for more success at Lommel, although the tough track will make it a tough task, as he only returned from injury in Loket last weekend, meaning his fitness won’t be at its best and Lommel demands 100% fitness.

No doubt, standing in his way is his hero, Jeffrey Herlings and we all know, Lommel is also a place that Herlings enjoys, with a handful of victories at the circuit over his career. Both live close to Lommel, and a Dutch shootout would be the perfect weekend for the fans crossing the border into Belgium.
